Just saw The Crazies today. I'm not a horror fan at all. I only saw the movie because a friend who'll soon be going to Ireland for five weeks wanted to see it, so I let him have his pick.

So, I was pleasantly surprised to find the movie entertaining, not too gory, and -- most importantly -- smartly written. In fact, that's the movie's greatest strength: smart characters. Unlike typical horror movies, no one in this movie is an idiot, and no one does anything blatantly unwise. The movie could have easily fallen into that trap because of the rural setting, but only about three characters could be considered stereotypical "hicks," and they're very minor characters.

The movie was written by Scott Kosar & Ray Wright and directed by Breck Eisner. Thanks to Kosar & Wright, the movie feels realistic, and thanks to Eisner, the movie isn't unnecessarily graphic (I looked away more times than I really needed to). If more people made horror movies like they do, I might not dislike the genre so much.
